What kind
of health assessments we do for
sperm donors?
- Assessments include the following: Counseling for hereditary diseases and hereditary psychiatric disorders; Blood testing, including tests for infectious diseases such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis, gonorrhea and AIDS; Tests for genetic diseases such as thalassemia (complete blood count, CBC) and spinal muscular atrophy (genetic testing), karyotype testing and toxicology screening (urinanalysis).
- There are still risk for other diseases that are not included in the donor assessment or cannot be anticipated by the Center.
Is it OK to use freeze sperm in sperm donor program?
Embryologists freeze the donor
sperm using a special media then keep sperm in liquid nitrogen at minus 196C,
and it can be stored for more than ten years while maintaining a reasonable
quality. And the post-thaw survival rate is around 30-50%.
How many times can I use the donor sperm?
Varies from treatment.
IVF treatment- Generally 3-4 times. Use intracytoplasmic sperm injection(ICSI) to choose good sperm for insemination.
IUI treatment- Generally 1-2 times. Need to raise the success rate by plenty amount of
sperm. Thawing more tubes of sperm can add the number that can use for the
treatment.
Can I see photos of sperm donors?
In accordance with the regulations of the Artificial Reproduction Act, the
Center can only provide information concerning the donor's skin color, blood
type and race for reference. All other data shall be kept confidential. And recipients
information are also confidential to donors. Therefore, you're not able to know
each other.
Can I use designated donor?
In accordance with the
regulations of the Artificial Reproduction Act, the Center can't use
designated donor by recipients' request. And the donor can't designate
the recipients either. Therefore, you can't not bring your friend or family as donor.
Is there any chance that my child will get married with donor's offspring?
There is very little chance. But if you're worried about it, Ministry of Health and Welfare has Regulations for Inquiring Kinship Information of Concern to the Children Born Through Assisted Reproduction. They can check if there are kinship between them. But they won't disclose donor's information.
